EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette women's lacrosse team closed out its regular season on Senior Day at Fisher Stadium on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 24-10 contest to Navy. Despite the loss, a Boston U. win over American gives the Leopards the five-seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament.
The Leopards played evenly with the Mids for the first half of the opening 30 minutes, but the Mids took over late and into the second stanza. The loss closes the book on the 2017 regular season with Lafayette's record at 10-7, going 5-4 in Patriot League action.
Senior Kirsten Wilhelmsen and sophomore Jane Kirby led the Lafayette attack with a pair of hat tricks on the day. Wilhelmsen now sits at 199 career goals, hoping to become just the third player in Lafayette history to reach the 200-mark with a score in her next contest. Additionally, Kirby moved her season total to 58, two shy of her and Wilhelmsen becoming the first duo in program history to each score 60 goals in the same season.
Sophomore Hannah Davey added a pair of scores, while senior Charlotte Rath and sophomore Emma Novick rounded out the scoring with a goal apiece. Lafayette's five-member senior class was honored prior to the contest for their contributions to the program over their four years. The Lafayette Class of 2017 includes Rath, Maggie Carver, Amanda Case, Ashley Tedesco and Wilhelmsen.
"Even though it wasn't our most impressive showing, I do think all the seniors played very well," head coach Alison Fisher said. "This class is very loyal to our program, their teammates, our staff; they believe in what we do. They definitely represent the culture that we're building. It's bittersweet that they played their last regular-season game today. They're the ones we can trust to facilitate the message."
Navy jumped on Lafayette early, forcing a timeout with three goals in the opening 1:27 of the game. The Leopards settled in over the next four minutes, able to score four of their own compared to one for the Mids to knot the game at 4-4 with 23:47 to play in the first.
Tallies from Julia and Jenna Collins put the Mids back up two, 6-4, but Wilhelmsen and Kirby sandwiched a Kayla Harris score to keep Lafayette within one at 7-6 with 15:40 on the clock. Unfortunately, that was where the Navy run began as the Mids rattled off six straight into the break to lead by a 13-6 score at halftime.
Kirby opened the second-half scoring on an assist from Novick, but the Mids answered with another five-goal spurt to put the game out of reach at 18-7 with 22:58 to play. Navy went on to score six of the final nine goals in the game to close out its 24-10 victory.
The visitors led the way in shots, 43-26 and draw controls, 19-16. Lafayette edged the ground ball battle, 14-13, and forced six failed clears from the Mids. Ingrid Boyum picked up the win for Navy with 10 saves on the day, while Anna Raymond suffered her third loss, making six saves in her 30:00 of action.
The Patriot League Tournament gets underway on Tuesday as the fifth-seeded Leopards will battle fourth-seeded Boston U. on the road. Opening draw from Massachusetts is slated for 4 p.m.
