BOSTON, Mass. - Momentum was on the home side in Boston, Mass. on Tuesday afternoon as the Lafayette women's lacrosse team finished its season in the Patriot League Quarterfinals, falling to Boston U. by a 14-7 score.
Senior Kirsten Wilhelmsen, the Patriot League Attacker of the Year, surpassed the 200-goal mark for her career, leading the Leopard offense with four goals on the day. Wilhelmsen completes her career with 203 total goals, good enough for third in program history.
It was the final game in the careers of five Lafayette seniors, including Maggie Carver, Amanda Case, Charlotte Rath, Ashley Tedesco and Wilhelmsen. The Leopards end with an overall record of 10-8, also boasting a winning record in Patriot League play at 5-4.
BU opened up an evenly-played first 30 minutes with a pair of goals at the 24-minute mark, following five early saves from junior goalie Anna Raymond. The Leopards responded with the first goal from Carver and back-to-back from Wilhelmsen to put the visitors in front at 14:50, 3-2.
The Terriers came back with two of their own to take the lead over the next three minutes, but two more from Wilhelmsen, including an outstanding individual effort through three defenders, put Lafayette in front, 5-4, with less than five minutes to go. Unfortunately, the Terriers closed the half with a three-goal run, winning four straight draw controls to go into the break with a 7-5 advantage.
That momentum carried over into the second stanza as, following an Emily Wingate score to open the frame, Boston U. ripped off five straight goals to edge out by six, 12-6, with 11:33 to play. Sophomore Emma Novick stopped the run, but that was the last goal from the Maroon and White, closing out the final minutes on a 14-7 season-ending defeat.
Stats favored the home side with a 43-25 advantage in shots, and 24-14 and 16-7 edges in ground balls and draw controls, respectively. Raymond was outstanding between the pipes for the Maroon and White, tying her career-high with 16 saves, including 10 in the first half of action.
Wilhelmsen's four goals were followed by one each from Carver, Novick and Wingate. Novick's marked her 100th career point, while Wilhelmsen rounded out her stat line with three draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Lafayette's final record of 10-8 is its best season since 2002 when the Leopards won the Patriot League Championship with a 13-7 overall mark.
