Leopards Overpower Wagner to Move to 3-0

Kucowski's third-straight double-double too much for Wagner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Lafayette women's basketball team handled business on the road on Saturday, taking down Wagner, 66-43, at Spiro Sports Center behind sophomore Natalie Kucowski's third-straight double-double to open the season.

The Leopards (3-0) are off to their best start since the 2013-14 season, when that squad opened that season with a 4-0 record.

After a tight opening quarter where Kucowski scored nine of the Leopards' 14 points, Wagner (1-3) was right in the ball game as the Seahawks shot 50 percent in the period to head into the second quarter tied, 14-14.

Freshman Makaila Wilson got going in the second, as the Leopards opened up scoring in the period when sophomore Drew Freeland hit Wilson in transition for an easy deuce followed by a freshman Nicole Johnson 3-pointer to go up, 20-14. Johnson ended the game with six assists to lead Lafayette.

Wagner answered right back when it put together back-to-back possessions with points in the paint to cut the Lafayette lead to two.

Junior Sydney Sabino, a transfer from Wagner, answered the bell, scoring her first points in a Lafayette uniform when she knocked down two 3-pointers in the period to give the Maroon and White the momentum and a six-point lead at the half.

The Seahawks opened the third quarter with a quick 5-2 run before both Kucowski and Wilson got going as the sophomore scored out of a Lafayette timeout and the freshmen converted an and-1 on the ensuing possession to give the Leopards all the momentum.

Kucowski scored a game-high 25 points and pulled down 17 rebounds with a career-high five rejections. It was the 12th double-double of her career and the second time she recorded three-consecutive double-doubles, also conquering the feat in her freshman season.

Lafayette controlled the glass, winning the rebounding battle 42-23 and outscored the Seahawks in the paint, 40-20, with a 13-2 advantage in second chance points.

Wilson had a career-high 10 points to go along with five rebounds and a steal while Freeland added nine points with four rebounds in the victory.

The Leopards return to action on Tuesday when St. Peter's travels to College Hill for a 7 p.m. tip-off at Kirby Sports Center.
