BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Freshman
Makaila Wilson recorded her first career double-double on Saturday afternoon at Steinberg Wellness Center, but Lafayette ultimately fell at the hands of LIU Brooklyn, 55-50.
After the Blackbirds (1-10) opened the second quarter on a 5-0 run, the Leopards (5-6) answered right back with a 12-1 run of their own powered by a 3-pointer by sophomore
Drew Freeland, a steal and score by senior
Alex Cantwell, and Freeland finding Wilson in transition to jump out to 26-12 lead with just under four minutes in the half.
The Freeland 3-ball moved her into sole possession of 18
th place on the all-time Lafayette 3-point field goals list with 46 in her career. She became the fastest to reach the number in program history, doing so in just 41 games.
LIU Brooklyn did not go away, closing the first half on a 10-0 run to go into the locker room with the score 26-22 in favor of the Maroon and White.
Wilson got hot in the third, tallying her double-double midway through the period. She finished with game and career-highs in points and rebounds with 16 points and 14 boards.
The Leopards trailed by four entering the fourth and sophomore
Natalie Kucowski opened the quarter by getting to the line and sinking both. Kucowski also recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
After pulling within two, the Blackbirds went on a 5-0 run to lead by seven with just five minutes remaining and give themselves breathing room entering crunch time.
From there, Wilson scored Lafayette's final eight points by way of an and-one and two offensive rebounds and put backs. However, LIU Brooklyn connected on its final four free throws to ice the victory.
Senior
Alex Cantwell came off the bench to score nine points with six rebounds and three steals while Freeland dished out four assists with six boards and five points.
The Leopards will enter Patriot League play as the calendar year flips, opening with Lehigh on Jan. 3 at
Kirby Sports Center with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m.
