FARMVILLE, Va. - The Lafayette baseball team battled the Lancers into extra-innings on Tuesday afternoon, using a five-run tenth inning to seal a 10-6 victory over Longwood.
The Maroon and White slipped behind the Lancers in the fifth inning as Longwood took a 5-4 lead. A sacrifice bunt in the seventh inning tied the game and the Leopards battled Longwood into extra innings. Jon Faraci got the start on the mound for the Leopards and held the Lancers without a hit over the first three innings. Lafayette got on the board first in the top of the third. Quentin Bubb worked a lead-off walk and swiped second base before moving to third on a throwing error. Luke Robinson brought Bubb home with a single to left field to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead.
Longwood got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 3-1 lead. The Maroon and White answered in the top half of the fifth. Robinson led-off with a walk, and was moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from John Marti. Spencer Rouse followed with a walk and moved to third on an errant pickoff attempt which brought home Robinson. Patrick Nelson wore a pitch to get on base, and Trey Durrah put down a bunt in then next at-bat which plated Rouse. The Leopards took advantage of another miscue from the Lancers as Nelson came around to score on a wild pitch as the Leopards took a 4-3 lead.
Lafayette's lead didn't last long however as the Lancers took the lead back in the bottom half of the fifth. Gabe Levine held the Lancers scoreless for two innings, while the Maroon and white were able to manufacture a run to knot the score at 5-5 in the top of the seventh as Rouse came around to score on a bunt from Mark Glover.
Michael Dunn took over on the mound from JP Woodward and continued to keep the Lancers off the board through the end of the ninth inning. The Leopards had the first chance in the 10th inning and ran with it, pushing five across the plate. Steven Cohen got the rally started with a single down the left field line.
Robinson worked another walk to put two runners on, while a wild pitch put them both into scoring position. An intentional walk loaded the bases and Rouse got a free pass as well as the Leopards took 6-5 lead. A single from Nelson made it 8-5, while Brandon Posivak capped the outburst with a two-run triple to right center. The Lancers got one run back in the bottom of the 10th, but Dunn shut them out from there, as the Leopards walked away with a 10-6 win.
Dunn earned the win on the mound to move to 2-0 on the year. The Maroon and White are back on the diamond tomorrow when they take on VCU. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
