RICHMOND, Va. - Despite digging out of an early deficit, the Leopards couldn't hold off VCU on Wednesday afternoon, falling on the road by a final score of 8-6.
Lafayette slipped behind early as the Rams were able generate five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Lafayette was able to get one run back in the second inning before taking a 6-5 lead in the fifth. VCU responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth and the Leopards couldn't find the offense to recover as the contest drew to a close.
Lafayette moves to 7-10 on the season while VCU improves to 10-8. Connor Jones (0-1) took the loss on the mound for the Leopards while Hayden Moore (1-2) earned the win for the Rams.
Trey Durrah and John Marti supplied the majority of Lafayette's offense as the duo combined to drive in five runs. Durrah was responsible for three RBI while going 1-for-3 at the plate with a sacrifice fly. Marti finished his day 1-for-4 with two RBI.
After grabbing one run back in the second inning off of Durrah's sacrifice fly, the sophomore provided a spark at the plate again in the fourth. Spencer Rouse got things started by taking advantage of a fielding error by VCU's shortstop. Patrick Nelson legged out an infield single to give the Maroon and White two baserunners. After advancing into scoring positon due to a balk, Durrah slapped a single into left field that cut the deficit to 5-3.
The Leopards kept the rally going in the fifth inning, seizing a 6-5 lead. Drew Jansen worked a walk to lead-off and was moved to second on a bunt single from Ethan Stern. Senior co-captain Luke Robinson loaded the bases with a single and John Marti capitalized, sending a two-RBI hotshot up the middle that tied the game at 5-5. Patrick Nelson capped the Leopards' rally with a single to left field that plated Rouse, giving Lafayette a 6-5 lead.
The Maroon and White's advantage was short lived hover as the Rams answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to retake the lead. Gabe Levine and David Giusti kept VCU off the board from there, but the Leopards couldn't find their offense as VCU held on for the 8-6 victory.
The Leopards will look to bounce back this weekend when they open a three-game set at George Mason. The series gets underway on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
