Leopards' Late-Inning Rallies Fall Short

March 17, 2018

Brown Box Score | GW Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Lafayette softball dropped a pair of tough games in day two of the Buff and Blue Challenge. Brown defeated the Leopards 4-3 in the morning game while George Washington won 7-6 in the afternoon contest. Both games featured late rallies from Lafayette but they were unable to pull out a victory.

Brown (5-7) got the scoring underway in the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead on an RBI-single from Meghan Wimmer.

Miranda Skurla got the Leopards started with a one-out single in the third inning. After putting herself in scoring position with a steal, Stacy Gordon knocked her in on a two-out double to tie the game at 1-1.

The Bears broke the tie in the sixth inning scoring two runs off Hannah Cook who took over for Gordon in the fifth inning. Brown extended their lead to 4-1 in that inning scoring one more run off Alexis Randall who finished the game for Lafayette.

The Maroon and White responded in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs to bring the score to 4-3. The Leopards benefited from a Brown error that would have ended their scoring threat. Instead Kaitlyn Rarick and Maddie Wensel went onto score, giving Lafayette a chance in their final at-bats. Brooke Wensel led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk but the Leopards were unable to capitalize.

Gordon had a solid performance in the circle, allowing one run on four hits in four innings of work. Cook took the loss for the Leopards, surrendering two earned runs on three hits . After replacing Cook, Randall let up one earned run on one hit while walking one.

In the afternoon game Lafayette played George Washington for the second time in the Buff and Blue Challenge. The Colonials led off the scoring with a two-run blast from Jayme Cone in the bottom of the first inning. George Washington added another run in the fourth before Emma McDonnell drove in Lafayette's first run of the game in the top half of the fifth.

The Colonials answered in their fifth inning at-bats, scoring a run on a wild pitch to stretch their lead to 4-1. Lafayette cut George Washington's lead to 4-3 after a double from Skurla scored Grover and Wensel. The Colonials answered with three runs of their own to retake a 7-3 lead.

The Maroon and White didn't go down without a fight in their final at-bats. With two outs in the inning, Sweigart doubled home McDonnell bringing the score to 7-4. Paige Grover and Wensel took back-to-back walks before Skurla was hit by a pitch to bring in another run.

Maddie Wensel kept Lafayette's hopes alive with an infield single to bring the Leopards within a run. With the bases loaded, Gordon came to bat with a chance to tie or give the Leopards a lead, but the George Washington pitcher forced a fly out to centerfield to end the game at 7-6.

The Maroon and White (1-17) will play the loser of Brown-Siena on Sunday at 10 a.m.
