Leopards Cruise to Win over FDU

March 6, 2018

Box Score

TEANECK, N.J.-- The Lafayette baseball team bested Fairleigh Dicknson on the road on Tuesday afternoon, earning a 10-2 victory over the Knights. The Maroon and White improve to 6-6 on the year while the loss moves FDU to 0-4.

The Leopards slipped behind early, but their bats came alive in the fourth inning, as the Maroon and White used a two-out rally to take a 4-2 lead. After the early hiccup, Lafayette starter Mark Anderson settled in and held the Knights scoreless through the fourth inning before turning the game over to the bullpen which kept FDU off of the scoreboard.

After Anderson was tagged for two runs in the bottom of the second, the Leopards offense broke through in the top of the fourth inning. Mark Glover got things started with a two-out single, and Drew Jansen added another single through the left side to put two runners on base. Brandon Posivak came to the plate and ripped a two-run double into left field to tie the game. Steven Cohen capped the rally in the next at bat, smacking the ball over the center field wall to give the Leopards a 4-2 advantage.

The score remained at 4-2 until the seventh inning as David Giusti came on in relief of Anderson and struck out three over two innings of work. Lafayette added four more runs in the top of the seventh. John Marti led off the inning with a single and then swiped second base. Spencer Rouse followed Marti with a walk. Patrick Nelson laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance the runners and Trey Durrah brought them home with a single to make it 6-2, Leopards. Lafayette grabbed its final two runs of the inning by taking advantage of a throwing error by the Knight's shortstop.

JP Woodward came on in relief of Giusti and struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh, turning the game back over to the Leopards offense, which put the game out of reach in the top of the eighth inning. Glover did the damage with a two-out single that scored Nelson and Marti.

Woodward and Michael Dunn saw out the game from there, as the Leopards walked away with the victory. Giusti was credited with his second win of the season while Austin Crebs took the loss for the Knights. Glover had an excellent day at the plate, going 3-for-5 (.350) with two RBI's and two runs scored.

The Leopards are back in action this Friday when they open a three-game set with UNC Greensboro. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
