EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. – A late-inning rally by the Leopards was not enough to overcome an early Rutgers lead on Wednesday afternoon, as the Scarlet Knights earned a 4-2 victory over the Maroon and White.
Brian Lannino (1-3) got the midweek start on the mound for the Leopards and held the Scarlet Knights to three hits and two runs through four innings. Karl Blum opposed Lannino on the mound and gave up two hits over the first four innings, both to John Marti, who finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate. Tommy Genuario (2-0) was credited with the win on the mound for Rutgers.
Rutgers was able to grab a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning via a wild pitch and a triple. Brett Kreyer entered the game in relief and set the Scarlet Knights down in order in the fifth inning but another three-bagger in the sixth put the Leopards down 4-0. The Maroon and White responded in the seventh inning, as they were able to break through against Rutgers' pitching.
Spencer Rouse wore a pitch to lead-off the inning, and a double from Patrick Nelson gave the Leopards runners on the corners. A walk from Trey Durrah loaded the bases as Steven Cohen entered the game as a pinch hitter. The senior calmly worked a base-on-balls to get the Leopards on the board. A wild pitch brought home Nelson, but that was all the offense the Maroon and White were able to muster in the frame.
Tyler Faccenda and Connor Jones each worked 1-2-3 innings in the seventh and eighth innings to keep the deficit at two runs as the Leopards remained within striking distance. However, the Scarlet Knights continued to stifle Lafayette's bats as Rutgers earned the 4-2 victory.
Lafayette returns home for a weekend series against Army. The three-game set kicks off on Saturday, April 14 with a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
