April 15, 2018

Box Score

EASTON, Pa. - A fifth-inning, offensive outburst sealed the Lafayette baseball team's contest against Army on Sunday afternoon as the Black Knight's earned the series victory against the Leopards.

The loss moves the Maroon and White to 12-24 overall with a 2-11 mark in the Patriot League. Army improves to 21-14 with an 11-2 record in league play.

Freshman JP Woodward was on the hill for his first career start on Sunday afternoon and racked up four strikeouts in the second inning to mark a statistical rarity for the Maroon and White. Trey Durrah made a highlight reel catch in left field to start the contest as the Leopards held the Black Knights scoreless through the first two innings.

Army opened the scoring in the third inning as the Black Knights were able to tack on four runs. The Leopards couldn't generate much offense and Army took advantage in the fifth inning. The Black Knights put up 15 runs in the frame as the Leopards couldn't solve Army's lineup.

Lafayette broke though in the bottom of the frame as Spencer Rouse led-off with a single to left field. Rouse moved into scoring position after swiping second and was brought home by a single from Brandon Posivak. Another single from John Marti gave the Leopards runners on the corners, but they couldn't capitalize as Army forced a pop-up to end the inning.

The contest quieted down following the fifth inning, as the Black Knights stifled the Leopards' bats en route to the 22-1 victory.

The Maroon and White are back in action on Tuesday, April 17 when they travel to Philadelphia to take on Delaware in the finals of the Liberty Bell Classic. The contest is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Citizens Bank Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies.
