EASTON, Pa. -- Lafayette spring football season came to an official end on Saturday afternoon with the defense (maroon) claiming a 52-37 decision over the offense (white) in the annual Maroon-White Spring Game.
Second-year Lafayette head coach John Garrett made several key announcements at halftime, pointing out senior wide receiver Joey Chenoweth and junior defensive back Tre Jordan as the spring season's most-improved players.
Garrett followed that by announcing the four senior captains: running back C.J. Amill, offensive lineman Kevin Zataveski, linebacker Jerry Powe and safety Trent Crossan.
The game action used a scoring system that awarded points to the offense for first downs, touchdowns, field goals and PATs while the defense could accumulate points by forcing three-and-outs, punts, acquiring takeaways and managing stops on fourth down among other options.
In the game, the defense forced punts on two possessions to take an 8-0 lead. The offense picked up a pair of first downs on runs by Nick Pearson (2 carries for 27 yards and 4 catches for 57 yards) and Selwyn Simpson. Sophomore quarterback Sean O'Malley finished the drive with a 7-yard TD pass to senior tight end Angus Evans. Jacob Bissell capped the drive with a PAT on the hold of Michael Turk and snap from Ryan Dickens.
Sophomore Cole Northrup made his first appearance on the third series of the game. Powe forced a fumble by Amill that Jordan recovered as the Maroon led 16-11 at the end of the first quarter. Two minutes into the second quarter Izaiah Avent picked off Northrup for the 20-11 lead.
O'Malley closed the first half with a 15-yard TD toss to Quinn Revere in the Kirby Sports Center endzone, as the Maroon led 28-22 on a sun-drenched day at Fisher Stadium. O'Malley finished the day 19-of-29 for 181 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.
In the second half, the defense held the offense in check. Sophomore running back J.J. Younger did rip off a 30-yard run, but the offense could not capitalize. He was the team's leading rusher with three carries for 31 yards. The defense stopped that drive by forcing a fumble to lead 46-27.
On the final play of the game, Northrup found Revere (5 catches for 74 yards) for his second touchdown of the game, a 20-yard strike that ran the final to Maroon 52, White 37. Northrup ended the afternoon 13-of-22 for 117 yards with one touchdown.
Junior wide receiver Julian Spigner had a solid game with six catches for 42 yards at wide receiver as one of seven players to catch a pass from the three quarterbacks who suited up.
"We talk about constant and continual improvement and we saw that. All aspects really improved and it's a testament to our coaches and the work ethic of our team," Garrett said. "The spring is the development part of the year that we get these 15 practices and the guys really put in the work, the coaches had them prepared, and we got better."
Lafayette will open training camp in August, looking toward the Leopards first game of the 2018 season on Sept. 1 at Sacred Heart.
NOTES: The days started for fans and families with an autograph session in front of Kirby Sports Center with the football and women's lacrosse teams and concluded with a last huddle for the football graduating Class of 2018 on Fisher Field.
