ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Leopards fell in non-league action on Wednesday evening as Penn State earned an 8-1 victory over the Maroon and White at Coca-Cola Park.
A quiet night at the plate spelled the difference for the Leopards as Penn State generated eight runs on eight hits compared to five hits for Lafayette. Richard Villa led the Maroon and White at the plate, finishing the night 3-for-4.
Penn State struck first in the third inning as a sacrifice fly put the Leopards down 1-0. As the game moved into the fourth inning, Tyler Faccenda entered the game and struck out the side. Lafayette couldn't answer in the bottom of the frame, and the Nittany Lions seized the momentum with a four-run fifth inning.
Trailing 7-0, the Leopards got on the board in the eighth as John Marti and Trey Durrah combined to manufacture a run. Marti got on board with a one out single and Durrah did the damage in the next at-bat, belting a double off of the leftfield wall that plated Marti.
Penn State tacked on another run in the top of the ninth as the Leopards came to the plate in the bottom of the frame. The Maroon and White put two runners on but couldn't bring them home, as the Nittany Lions earned the victory.
Lafayette returns home this weekend to host Bucknell and Navy. Prior to Saturday's doubleheader against the Bison, the Leopards will honor their nine members of the class of 2018.
