EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette baseball team exploded for 16 hits on Wednesday afternoon, dispatching Monmouth by a final score of 11-5.
Brendan Ball (4-2) got the start on the mound and tossed 4.1 innings, fanning three batters along the way. Ball got plenty of run support, as the Maroon and White racked up 11 runs, led by the trio of Steven Cohen, John Marti and Ethan Stern, who all finished the day with three hits. Hunter Silvernail finished the contest with a career-best two hits and four RBI to pace the Leopards.
Monmouth got on the board first with a solo homer, but the Hawks edge didn't last for long as the Leopards tacked on five runs in the bottom of the frame. Marti led-off with a single and moved to third after Durrah knocked a single into right field. Luke Robinson loaded the bases with a walk and with one out, Cohen singled to left to spark the rally and tie the game.
Patrick Nelson followed with a base-on-balls to drive in a run before a wild pitch made it 3-1. Hunter Silvernail capped the outburst with a two-run single to give the leopards a four run lead.
After a quiet second inning, Lafayette struck again in the third, as Cohen started the inning with a double down the leftfield line. Following a walk by Jake Sniegocki, Stern came through with a double into right field that plated Cohen. With two runners in scoring position, Silvernail added two more RBI to his ledger, sending a single into left field to put the Maroon and White up 8-1.
Monmouth grabbed two runs back in the fifth but a solo shot from Cohen in the sixth and two-run blast to straightaway center in the seventh from Trey Durrah put the Leopards comfortably ahead the rest of the way as they cruised to the 11-5 victory.
The Maroon and White hit the road to close out the 2018 season, making the trek to Worcester Mass. this Saturday to take on Holy Cross. The Leopards then head to West Point, N.Y. for a doubleheader against Army on Sunday.
