May 5, 2018

WEST POINT, N.Y.-- Army secured both ends of Saturday's Patriot League doubleheader, winning 9-1 and 6-5.

In game one, Army (25-26, 9-8) scored three runs in the first two innings and never faltered. Lacey Swafford doubled and later scored in the first inning. In the second inning, Izzy Gates singled in a pair of runs as Army led 3-0.

The Leopards got on the scoreboard in the third when Maddie Wensel drew a bases-loaded walk to make the score 3-1.

The hosts stretched their lead to 6-1 in the fourth. Taylor Drayton doubled in two runs and Kristen McPeek singled in another. Army put away the game with a run in the fifth following an Ally Snelling triple and plated two more in the sixth on Nena Riccoboni's two-run single.

Alexis Randall (5-18) went the distance for the Leopards, allowing nine runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings in the loss. Courtney Springman collected the circle victory, surrendering one run on three hits while striking out seven.

In game two, Lafayette trailed from the outset, but used a pair of home runs to knot the game at 5-5 in the seventh inning. The Leopards were down to their final out of the game when Brooke Wensel stepped to the plate. She delivered a solo home run to left field to bring Lafayette within 5-3.

Maddie Wensel (3-for-4) followed with a single to extend the inning and set the stage for Miranda Skurla. Skurla connected for her first home run of the season and tied the game at 5-5.

In the home half of the seventh, McPeek (3-for-4) reached on an infield single and moved into scoring position on Carrie Reilly's single. The next batter Emily Ballesteros doubled home McPeek for the winning run in a 6-5 final.

Hannah Cook started the game for Lafayette, throwing three innings of four-run softball. Stacy Gordon (0-15) threw the final three and allowed one earned run on seven hits. Renee Poirier (2-7) got the final out of the seventh, but it was good enough to earn her the circle victory.

Lafayette (7-41, 3-14) closes out the season on Sunday vs. Army at 11 a.m. (moved up due to impending rain).
