Mason Worthington missed the opening two games of the 2018 season, a pair of Lafayette home victories. Healthy and inserted into the starting lineup on Sunday against Saint Peter's, the Manchester, Conn. native delivered 50 minutes on the pitch and a goal and assist in the Leopards 3-0 win at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium.
After a lackluster first 45 minutes for the Leopards, Worthington got things rolling early in the second half when she settled a ball in the right corner of the 18-yard box and twisted a shot from right-to-left that clipped the post before settling into the net for her first career goal.
"During halftime, coach really emphasised picking up the tempo and working on transitions and passing choice," said Worthington. "Really just executing what we have been working on in practice and capatilizing on our opportunities."
After managing only four shots in the first half, chances came at a much greater clip as the team heeded coach
Mick Statham's halftime words. Lafayette recorded a dozen shots in the final 45 minutes and spent a good deal of time in the offensive end.
Worthington had a hand in the second tally of the afternoon as she took a ball on the right side of the field and sent a cross to senior forward
Alex Stanford inside the box. Stanford made one touch before sending the ball past the Saint Peter's goalkeeper in the 66th minute for her fourth goal on the season.
"Mason's goal settled us down alot - we just had to be patient and create some openings," said Statham. "It was just a matter of getting some more quality into the game. I thought the players did a very good job in the second half of making some adjustments and raising the quality of the decisions they were making and then executing."
The execution was on full display on the final goal of the afternoon as senior midfielder
Katie Brannigan sent a pass to freshman
Julia Moran who found Stanford again in scoring range. This time Stanford didn't go past the keeper, instead choosing to chip it over her and into the net for her league-leading fifth goal.
Reigning Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week
Maggie Pohl recorded another clean sheet, her second of the season. Pohl finished with four saves - including two of a sprawling variety - to lower her goals against average to .33 on the season.
Lafayette starts the season at 3-0 for the first time since 2015. The Leopards have outscored their opponents 9-1 on the season and registered a pair of shutouts. Statham's squad will have to leave the friendly confines of Oaks Stadium for the first time this season when they travel south to face Delaware at 7 p.m. on Friday.
"Every game is different," said Statham. "We just have to enjoy the day off tomorrow and then prepare for Delaware. Hopefully the momentum will help us, but it will be a completely different game."
The next home contest at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium will be in one week when the Leopards welcome Hartford at 2 p.m. on September 2.
