Leopards Host Blue Devils on Family Weekend

Game notes vs. Central Connecticut State

The Match-Up: The Leopards return home to host Central Connecticut State on Saturday at 6 p.m. as part of Family Weekend on College Hill. The game can be seen on the Lafayette Sports Network on RCN-4 and WBPH-60 and on GoLeopards.com.

Back in Action: A familiar number was back in the middle of the offensive line at Colgate when No. 62 Kevin Zataveski returned to his starting spot at center. The senior captain missed all of 2017 and was poised to return at the start of 2018, but a knee injury during training camp delayed his return. Zataveski played every offensive snap at Colgate.

Flags on the Field: Lafayette has shown discipline when it comes to penalties. The Leopards are averaging just three penalties per game (third in the nation) for 31.2 yards per game (sixth in the nation). Lafayette was not whistled for a penalty against Monmouth, the first time it was flag free since Nov. 18, 2006 vs. Lehigh.

Fresh Faces On the Depth Chart: There are currently 12 freshmen listed on the depth chart on offense, defense and special teams. Of that dozen players, four (DT Ian Grayson, DE Malik Hamm, OL Joe Grundhoffer, FS Romeo Wykle) have started at least one game, with Grayson starting every game.

Last Time Out: No. 24 Colgate scored on three of Lafayette's four first-half turnovers on the way to a 45-0 final in the Patriot League opener for the Leopards. The offense was held to 18 rushing yards while giving up 279 to Colgate's offense which held a 15-minute advantage in time of possession.

Next Up: The Leopards will have Oct. 6 off from action, using the week to rest and prepare for Georgetown on Homecoming weekend on Oct. 13.

Hammin' It Up: Freshman DE Malik Hamm has performed early and often in his brief collegiate career. Hamm earned his first collegiate start at Delaware, registering  five tackles with three tackles for a loss and a sack. When he sacked the Delaware QB, he stripped the ball, recovered the fumble and ran it back for 22 yards.
Hamm came off the bench to record seven tackles (two for loss) vs. Monmouth, and in a start at No. 24 Colgate he had seven tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss. He is currently fifth on the team with 20 stops, trailing linebackers Michael Root, Jerry Powe and Major Jordan and safety Trent Crossan. Hamm leads the team with three sacks.

Kick-off Returns: Lafayette is ranked 23rd in the nation and first in the Patriot League for kick-off returns, averaging 23.8 yards per return. J.J. Younger is averaging 26.5 yards per return while CJ Amil checking in at 20.7 yards per return.

Younger Breaks Away: Sophomore J.J. Younger ran back the Leopards' opening kick off vs. Monmouth 95 yards for the score. It was Younger's first career touchdown and the Leopards' first touchdown of the season. The 95-yard return is the fifth-longest in school history. At Delaware, Younger had three returns for 75 yards, including a long return of 43 yards.

The Garrett Era: John Garrett is in his second season as the head coach of the Lafayette Leopards. Garrett took over the coaching reins on Dec. 21, 2016 and saw Lafayette register a third-place finish in the conference in 2017. Garrett has more than 25 years of coaching experience at the NFL, NCAA FBS and NCAA FCS levels. Offensive coordinator stints at Richmond and Oregon State preceded his hiring.

A Little Perspective: Head coach John Garrett is 3-12 thus far at Lafayette in his first two seasons, the exact same mark that Frank Tavani had through his first 15 games in 2000-01. Tavani's predecessor, Bill Russo, fared better with an 11-4 record in 1981-82 while Neil Putnam was 6-9 in 1971-72 and Harry Gamble was 8-7 in 1968-69.

Moving Up: With 10 completions at No. 24 Colgate, soph. QB Sean O'Malley moved into ninth place at Lafayette for career completions (300). He supplanted Andrew Shoop '13 (293 | 2010-12) and next will look to move past Shawn McHale '97 (386 | 1994-96).

Major Contributions: Soph. LB Major Jordan hasn't needed much time to adjust to his starting role at WILL linebacker. After playing primarily on special teams and starting one game at linebacker last season, Jordan is third on the team in tackles with 26, including 2.5 tackles for loss.

Opponent: Central Connecticut State comes into week five with a 2-2 record. The Blue Devils own wins over Lincoln Univ., 55-0, and Fordham, 24-13, on Sept. 22. Losses came to FBS school Ball State in the opener (42-6) and Columbia  (41-24) in week three. CCSU returns 13 starters (8 offensive, 5 defensive) from a 2017 squad that was 8-4 overall and 6-0 in the Northeast Conference on its way to an NCAA FCS Playoff berth.
Senior QB Jacob Dolegala has completed 62 percent of his passes for 756 yards while tossing five TDs with one interception. CCSU has enjoyed a strong running game with three players (Enyce Walker, Drew Jean-Guillaume and Aaron Dawson) with more than 100 yards rushing on the season.
Defensively, senior outside linebackers Tre Jones and Kenneth Keen lead the team with 19 stops apiece.
Pete Rossomando is in his fifth season as head coach, holding a 19-31 record at the school in New Britain, Conn.
