WEST POINT, N.Y. – Despite turning the ball over a season-low 13 times on Wednesday afternoon, the Lafayette women's basketball team suffered a 65-50 defeat to Army at Christl Arena, playing its second midweek matinee in three games.
Shooting woes hurt the Leopards (6-10, 1-4 PL), scoring just two points in the opening quarter before finding some form in the second. Sophomore
Olivia Martino hit a 3-pointer and sophomore
Drew Freeland got to the rim on back-to-back possessions to cut the Army Lead to just six points with 2:13 to play in the first half.
Freeland led the way with 14 points and two assists for Lafayette, her fourth straight double-digit scoring performance. Martino added 12 points and four rebounds while sophomore
Natalie Kucowski had 13 points, six rebounds and four assists. Â
The Black Knights (7-9, 2-3 PL) closed the quarter on a 6-0 run to regain their double-digit lead and take the 27-15 advantage into the locker room.
Army caught fire from beyond the arc in the third, specifically Jess Lewis who connected on three of Army's four 3-pointers in the frame and took an 18-point lead into the final 10 minutes.
Madison Hovren had a game-high 23 points to go along with 16 rebounds while Lewis scored 22 with seven assists.
Lafayette shot 62 percent from the floor in the final quarter and outscored army 18-17 in the frame, but could not overcome the early deficit.
The Leopards will continue the road swing on Sunday, traveling to Loyola for a 2 p.m. tip-off before returning home for Youth Day on Jan. 23 at
Kirby Sports Center.
