LAST TIME OUT
Lafayette couldn't extend its season-long winning streak to six on Sunday afternoon, running into a hot-shooting Bucknell team on the road and falling by a 118-76 score.
The loss was the first for the Leopards since Feb. 2, ending a five-game winning streak, the longest for the Maroon and White since the 2012-13 campaign. The Leopards fell to 10-17 overall this season and 7-9 in Patriot League play, while Bucknell moved into a tie with Colgate for the top spot in the conference standings at 12-4 in league action and 18-10 overall.
Junior
Kyle Stout was the lone bright spot for Lafayette on the day, tying a career-high with 17 points on 5-of-6 from beyond the arc, the only Leopard at double-figure scoring. Freshman
Isaac Suffren added nine points and sophomore
Alex Petrie added seven.
Bucknell just didn't miss much on the day, draining a school-record 21 three's on 36 attempts, a 58.3 percent conversion rate. The Bison shot 64.3 percent from the field overall and put six players in double-figure scoring, led by 21 from freshman Andrew Funk.
THE SKINNY ON THE TERRIERS
Boston U., picked to finish fourth in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, has underachieved for much of the season, currently sitting in a tied for seventh at 6-10 in league play and 13-16 overall. That being said, the Terriers may have found their form at the right time, entering Wednesday's contest off back-to-back victories, knocking off Holy Cross on the road on Feb. 18, 70-60, and returning home for a win over Loyola on Saturday, 72-65.
Boston U. gets the majority of its scoring from three sources, led by 16.3 points per game from Max Mahoney, who the Leopards held to just 10 points on 5-of-13 from the field in the first matchup earlier this season. Tyler Scanlon, who led the Terriers with 28 points against Lafayette on Feb. 6, puts up 13.8 points per night and Javante McCoy adds 11.2 points per game. Mahoney also paces the visitors on the glass at 6.5 boards per contest, leading a group that averages 2.2 more rebounds than its opponents this season.
LAST MEETING
Lafayette righted the ship on the road on Feb. 6, snapping a four-game losing streak with 54.4 percent shooting to take care of Boston U. by a 79-72 score. In the longest road trip of the season for the Maroon and White at approximately 300 miles from
Kirby Sports Center, the Leopards made Case Gymnasium feel like home. Lafayette broke a 65-65 tie with less than five minutes to play by scoring 14 of the game's final 21 points off the hands of five different players to seal it.
Sophomore
Alex Petrie netted his second 20-point game of the league slate to lead four Leopards in double-figure scoring on 8-of-14 from the field and 3-of-7 from three-point range. Junior
Lukas Jarrett, sophomore
Justin Jaworski and junior
Kyle Stout rounded out the major sources of offense with 13, 12 and 11, respectively. Stout, making his first start since the season moved to the conference portion, scored eight of his 11 in the opening half of play, adding four rebounds and an assist to his stat line in 19 minutes of action.
Boston U.'s Tyler Scanlon was the only significant offensive contributor for a Terrier team that shot 43.3 percent from the field and 41.2 percent from three. Scanlon tallied a game-high 28 points to go along with seven boards, making 10 of his 17 shots from the floor and 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Alex Vilarino and Max Mahoney added 11 and 10 points each.
NEXT PLAY
Lafayette's loss on Sunday to Bucknell snapped the Leopards' season-long win streak at five games, the longest for the Maroon and White since the 2012-13 season. Three of those five wins came on the road at Boston U., Navy and Loyola, with the other two at home against Holy Cross and American. In 2012-13, the Leopards rattled off seven consecutive victories, with a pair in postseason play.
THE POLISH RIFLE
Sophomore
Justin Jaworski has been on a tear from the three-point line in recent games, moving up to second in the nation in three-point percentage at 48.7 percent for the year. In Patriot League outings, Jaworski has gone 47-for-84 from distance (55.3%). At that percentage, it's only fitting that Jaworski is second in the Patriot League in three's made per game as well, knocking down 2.7 per contest.Â
MORE ON JAWS
Following a 1-of-2 effort from beyond the arc against Bucknell on Sunday, Jaworski moved his streak to 45 straight games with a three-pointer. That number is good enough for second in the nation, behind only Mack Smith of Eastern Illinois, who has hit a shot from deep in 46 straight contests.Â
