BOSTON – Sophomore
Natalie Kucowski scored a game-high 22 points with 14 rebounds to give the Lafayette women's basketball team an opportunity on the game's final possession on Wednesday night, but ultimately Boston U. edged out the Leopards, 50-49, at Case Gymnasium.
The teams traded baskets to open the game before the Leopards were able to go on a 7-2 run as Kucowski hit a 3-pointer followed by the Philadelphia native finding classmate
Drew Freeland ahead of the pack for the easy deuce.
Kucowski recorded her 13
th double-double of the season and matched her career high with six rejections.
Lafayette was able to close the first half on a quick 5-0 outburst as Freeland got free late in the shot clock for an open lay-up and senior
Alex Cantwell knocked down the deep 3-ball for the final points of the second quarter and give the Maroon and White a 25-22 lead at the break.
The Terriers closed out the third quarter on a 13-4 run, but Lafayette came storming back in the fourth. After BU scored the opening bucket of the frame, Lafayette erupted with a 13-0 run to regain the lead with freshman
Nicole Johnson's free throws, 48-46, at the 3:25 mark.
BU then got to the line and hit 1-of-2 to stop the bleeding and following a defensive stop, Lauren Spearman hit a dagger 3-pointer to give the Terriers a 50-48 lead with two minutes to play.
Each team struggled to find the basket down the stretch and the Lafayette defense made the biggest stop of the game on BU's final possession. The Terriers took a timeout with 18 seconds left and the Leopards forced a deep 3-point attempt late in the shot clock, and Johnson grabbed the miss to get a timeout of their own.
Out of the timeout, Kucowski pulled down an offensive rebound and was hit to go to the line with 1.5 second left, where she could only convert 1-of-2 and time expired.
Kucowski moved into second place on the Lafayette single-season rebounds list with 306 on the season, just shy of her freshman year total of 309, which stands at the top.
Freshman
Makaila Wilson added five points with five boards and Johnson scored five with four rebounds and three assists. Sophomore
Olivia Martino scored six points on 2-of-2 3-point shooting.
BU featured three players in double-figures, led by Payton Hauck's 16-point performance and Riley Childs recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
The Leopards have just two regular season games remaining, as they will head to rival Lehigh on Saturday for a 6 p.m. tip-off before hosting Colgate at
Kirby Sports Center on March 6 prior to the Patriot League Tournament.
