Lafayette Downed in Final Regular Season Road Test

Drew Freeland led all scorers with 14 points and Kucowski breaks her own rebounding record

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Sophomore Drew Freeland led all scorers with 14 points at Stabler Arena Saturday night, but Lehigh was too much for the Lafayette women's basketball team as the Mountain Hawks took down the Leopards, 67-50.

The Mountain Hawks (19-9, 11-6 PL) knocked down three of their first four 3-pointers to jump out to an early advantage, but Freeland kept Lafayette in the game with eight first quarter points to only be down eight points after the period.

Sophomore Natalie Kucowski broke the Lafayette (7-21, 2-15 PL) single-season rebounding record in the first quarter, a record she set her freshman season, and finished with 12 points and seven boards. Freeland was 6-of-8 from the field and pulled down six rebounds with two assists.

Each side struggled to score in the second quarter until an offensive surge in the final 1:15 when Lehigh knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers before freshman Jiselle Havas hit a triple of her own to head to the half down, 32-19.

The Lehigh lead grew to 17 points at the media timeout in the third before the Leopards were able to cut it to single-digits when freshman Nicole Johnson drove to the hoop and converted the and-one and Kucowski made a strong post move to make it 43-34 at the 2:49 mark.

Freshman Jiselle Havas would make it an eight-point game with under two minutes left in the third with a deep 3-pointer, but two separate splits at the line from Lehigh made it 49-39 entering the fourth.

The Mountain Hawks came out and hit 6-of-8 to open the fourth quarter to help grow their lead in the final frame.

Havas came off the Lafayette bench to score six points on 2-of-3 shooting from deep and senior Alex Cantwell added eight with three assists.

Lehigh featured a balanced attack as only two Mountain Hawks were in double-figures as Gena Grundhoffer and Camryn Buhr each scored 11.

One regular season game remains as Lafayette will host Colgate on Wednesday night a 7 p.m. at Kirby Sports Center before hitting the road for the Patriot League Tournament, slated to begin March 9.
