Softball Falls to Oakland at Phoenix Invitational

Grover and Scott lead the Leopard offense in 10-3 loss

ELON, N.C. - A slow start hindered the Leopards in a 10-3 loss to Oakland in a Saturday morning contest at the Elon Phoenix Invitational on the BB&T Field at Hunt Softball Park.

Lafayette fell behind 7-0 in the first three innings but rallied to cut the deficit to 7-3 behind the offense of sophomore Paige Grover and freshman Erin Scott. Grover connected with a home run with one out in the bottom of the the third inning. Scott doubled to lead off the fifth and came around to score an unearned run on an Oakland error. An inning later, Scott delivered a two-out RBI single to score Grover who had singled earlier in the frame.

Sophomore Hannah Cook pitched 4.2 innings of relief for Lafayette and quelled the Golden Grizzlies third-inning uprising by getting the final two outs of the inning on a pair of ground balls without allowing any additional runs to score. Cook held down the Oakland offense over the next two innings before the opponents put the game away with three runs in the top of the sixth.

It was the first two-hit game in Scott's young collegiate career as she raised her batting average to .375 through three games. In addition to a single and the ninth home run of her career, Grover also walked in four at bats and the duo combined for four of the Leopards' six hits.

Lafayette will have a chance to bounce back later this afternoon when they take on La Salle in a game scheduled for 4:45 p.m.
