ELON, N.C. - The Lafayette softball team strung together six hits in the seventh inning to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 7-3 advantage against LaSalle on Saturday to earn their first victory of the spring season in the second game of the Phoenix Invitational.
The Leopards (1-3) entered the final inning with six hits but doubled that total and pushed across five runs off La Salle reliever Morgan Orlowski.
Pinch hitter
Hannah Lee got things started with a leadoff single and was sacrificed to second by fellow freshman
Erica Hanson.
Natasha Miner delivered an RBI-single to plate Lee and knot the score at 3-all.
Paige Grover followed with an RBI-double to give Lafayette the lead and Brooke and
Maddie Wensel added a double and single, respectively.
Grover scored on
Maddie Wensel's hit and
Brooke Wensel crossed the plate a batter later on a throwing error by the Explorers (0-4).
Maddie Wensel registered the final run on an RBI-single by
Addison Goldwait.
Freshman pitcher
Kinzi Van Wyk earned the first victory of her career with four scoreless innings in relief of starter
Stacy Gordon.
Brooke Wensel had a pair of doubles and scored two runs for Lafayette.
Maddie Wensel, Miner, Grover and Goldwait also contributed two hits for the Leopards' offense.
Due to a rainout on Friday, Lafayette is slated to play two games back-to-back on Sunday. The first matchup will be against host Elon at 11 a.m. on BB&T Field at Hunt Softball Park.  At the conclusion of that contest, the Leopards will face either La Salle or Elon to round out the tournament.
