EASTON, Pa. – Villanova got the best of a pitchers' duel on Wednesday afternoon at Metzgar Fields. The Wildcats scored single runs in the second, sixth and seventh innings in a 3-0 final. Each team managed only four hits on the afternoon with
Brooke Wensel going 2-for-3.
Villanova (18-17) took the early lead in the top of the second when Kendall Ohman singled home Jordan Olivarez who had reached on a two-out double.
In the fourth, Villanova managed its third hit of the day, a one-out triple to right field by Delaney Switzer. Leopard starter
Stacy Gordon (5 IP, 0 ER, 3H, 5 K, 2 BB) retired the next two batters with a strikeout and infield pop-up to keep the score at 1-0.
Villanova added another run in the sixth.
Kinzi Van Wyk (2 IP, 2 ER, 1H, 1 K, 3 BB) put the first two batters on via a walk and hit by pitch. The next two grounded out, and Olivarez's 6-3 roll-out pushed Villanova ahead 2-0.
The visitors gave themselves some breathing room in the seventh as Caroline Jones lifted a solo homer to right field for the 3-0 advantage. Rightfielder
Erin Scott saved a run in the inning, making a catch on the warning track.
In the last of the seventh, Lafayette sent batters 5-6-7 to the plate.
Malori Pojar pulled a ball down the leftfield line, but was held to a one-out single. Villanova reliever Taylor Rhinehart retired the final two batters to end the game. She earned a three-inning save in relief of circle winner Gabby Wenn who struck out two over four innings.
Lafayette (4-27-1) remains at home, hosting St. Peter's on Thursday in a doubleheader starting at 3:05 p.m.
