Box Score 2 EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette softball team finished up its home schedule on Wednesday afternoon at Metzgar Fields, dropping both ends of a doubleheader to MAAC power Marist by 5-0 and 7-2 scores.
The visitors held the Leopards to two hits in the first game of the series, both coming off the bat of freshman
Natasha Miner. Calista Phippen and Nicole Teague threw four and three innings for the win and save, respectively, moving Phippen's record to 17-3 on the year.
Lafayette's
Stacy Gordon went all seven innings in the opening tilt, giving up five runs on eight hits with five strikeouts. Senior
Maddie Wensel was the only other Leopard to reach base, drawing a walk in her three plate appearances.
Marist stepped on the gas right away in game two, scoring six runs in the opening three innings to lead by a 6-0 score early. An RBI double from Wensel down the left field line plated
Brooke Wensel for the Leopards' first run of the day in the bottom of the fourth and Miner added an RBI single to left to match a Marist run in the fifth to make it 7-2 into the later innings.
Unfortunately, the attack stopped there as Kallen Leeseberg relieved Megan Beiermeister for the final three innings of work for the visitors, giving up one run and one hit with three walks and three K's. Marist added a final run in the top of the seventh to seal it with an 8-2 final.
Freshman
Kinzi Van Wyk took the loss, striking out three and giving up three runs earned over five innings. Sophomore
Hannah Cook pitched the final two frames for the Maroon and White. She struck out one and walked one with one earned run and three hits allowed.
At the plate,
Brooke Wensel went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while
Maddie Wensel and Miner added RBI knocks.
Erin Scott,
Hannah Lee,
Ellen McDonnell and
Erica Hanson each drew a walk in three tries at the dish.
The losses drop the Leopards to 8-37-1 on the year, while Marist improves to 30-19. Lafayette returns to Patriot League play this weekend, traveling to Worcester, Massachusetts for a three-game set with Holy Cross to finish the 2019 campaign.
