Women's Basketball Heads to Army Wednesday

The Leopards took down Army last year in the first round of the PLT

OPENING TIP:
*Powered by a zero turnover, 27 point third quarter, Lafayette defeated Navy on Saturday, 79-52, for their third league win of the season. Senior Alexis Santarelli recorded her first double double of the season (19 points, 11 rebounds) and junior Natalie Kucowski recorded her 1,000th career point.

*Junior Natalie Kucowski hit two major milestones in the last week. Last Wednesday she became the program's all-time leading rebounder and on Saturday, she recorded her 1,000th career point, becoming just the 19th player in program history to do so.

*The Black Knights led the all-time series 42-25 heading into Wednesday's game. Prior to the Leopards win over the Black Knights in the first round of the Patriot League tournament last season, Army had won the previous nine meetings.

SCOUTING THE BLACK KNIGHTS
Led by head coach Dave Magarity in his fourteenth season at the helm, Amy comes into Wednesday's matchup with a 1-5 Patriot League record.

They are led by sophomore Alisa Fallon who is averaging 13.1and freshman Sabria Hunter who is averaging 8.6 rebounds per game. Sophomore Sarah Bohn leads the team in steals with 21 and sophomore Lindsey Scamman leads the team with nine blocks.

THE LAST MEETING
The last time the Black Knights and Leopards met was on March 9, 2019 in West Point, New York in the first round of the Patriot League tournament. Lafayette walked away with the close 63-61 victory to advance in the tournament.

Kucowski got going early, scoring 10 points in the first quarter, but Lafayette found itself trailing 23-17 after the opening 10 minutes as Army shot it 57 percent from the field in the opening frame.

That streak continued into the second with the Black Knights going on an 8-2 run to go up 12-points with 7:18 to play in the quarter. The Leopards had the answer as they closed the half on a 7-0 run when Kucowski knocked down a 3-ball and made a quick layup followed by Freeland's drive to the hoop to tie things at 37 at the break.

The third quarter went back-and-forth as the period saw eight lead changes before Army finally closed the period with a pair of layups to take the 3-point lead into the fourth.

The fourth quarter started with Army leading 50-47 before Lafayette went on a 10-0 run to open the period. The spurt was capped off by one of Olivia Martino's four 3-pointers to go up 57-50 with 3:24 to play.

The teams traded baskets in the final three minutes as Army's Madison Hovren made a layup through contact to tie the game at 61 with 14 seconds left, but missed the go-ahead free throw.

Freshman Makaila Wilson grabbed the Hovren miss and Lafayette used its final timeout to draw up the play that gave Holland the opportunity for the game-winning basket.

LEOPARDS LAST TIME OUT
It was an explosive 27-point third quarter that propelled Lafayette to its third league win Saturday afternoon, knocking down Navy 79-52.

After trading the lead for a majority of the first half, Lafayette, found themselves up by one, 31-30, at the start of the third quarter.

Kucowski started things off for the Leopards, putting in two from the paint. Navy responded with a layup of their own but Freeland added in another two for the Leopards and from there, they would go on a seven-point scoring run to put themselves up by 10.

Navy tried to cut into the Leopards lead but wasn't successful as they would score just three more points in the quarter. Lafayette ended the quarter on a six-point scoring run to push their lead out to 18 heading into the final quarter.

Lafayette didn't slow down at all in the fourth, pushing their lead out to 25 midway through the fourth quarter and with 26 seconds left in the game, Sabino floated in a three from beyond the arc to give the Leopards a 30-point lead, their largest of the game.

The Midshipmen scored with seven seconds left in the game to bring the final deficit to 27 and the final to 79-52.

AHEAD OF LAST SEASON
The Leopards win on Saturday was their third Patriot League win of the season, already passing their league win total from last season. They now have seven overall wins this season, two away from more than last season.

The last time the Leopards started 3-3 through the first six games of conference action was during the 2017-18 season, Coach Damon-Olson's first season at the helm. They finished that season 6-12 in league action and 11-19 overall.  A win over Army on Wednesday will keep them on same track as the 2017-18 squad was, putting them over .500 and 4-3 through seven conference games.
