NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Sophomore
Olivia Cunningham made it happen for the Lafayette women's lacrosse team on the road on Saturday afternoon, producing three of her five points in the second half to help the Leopards past Iona in New Rochelle, New York, 7-5.
Cunningham led all offensive performers in the outing with two goals and three assists to improve the Leopards to 2-0 on the road this season and 3-1 overall through the first two weeks of the campaign. Iona falls to 2-2 in defeat, surrendering a 4-3 halftime lead as the Leopards held them to just a single tally in the second 30 minutes.
The Lafayette defense was stout once again, allowing less than 10 goals for the fourth straight game to open the spring season. Junior
Quinn Lacy was excellent between the pipes with 13 saves on the day and senior midfielder
Ally Hickey registered a pair of caused turnovers.
Down 4-3 at the break, the Leopards scored a pair off the sticks of
Anna Stein and
Bella Alampi in the first six minutes to regain the lead with 24:19 to play. Cunningham and freshman
Meghan McLachlan added two more within 37 seconds of each other around the 11-minute mark to make it a three-goal margin and Iona was only able to find the net once late, seeing the buzzer sound on a 7-5 final.
Stein and McLachlan recorded a pair of goals each with Alampi the seventh tally next to the two from Cunningham. McLachlan, the reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week, also added an assist for three points on the day, while
Colleen Bannon led a winning effort in the circle with a game-high four draw controls.
Lafayette returns to Fisher Stadium for four of its next five contests to open March. Up next for the Maroon and White is a meeting with Manhattan on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
