GENEVA, N.Y.- Lafayette field hockey's
Simone Hefting and
Lineke Spaans were selected as Second Team All-Mideast Region honorees by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) on Tuesday.
The NFHCA describes the Division I All-Region teams as representatives of the highest levels of field hockey players in each of the five regions (Mid-Atlantic, Mideast, Northeast, South and West) with regard to nominating criteria. Each region has team sizes formed based upon the number of institutions within them (up to 16 student-athletes per team).
Hefting, a senior defender, now claims two All-Mideast selections, following the 2021 season. The Den Bosch, Netherlands native scored two goals for four points (1 GWG) and made four defensive saves this fall. She also claimed the 2022 Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year as well as First Team All-Patriot League.
Hefting anchored a Lafayette team that only allowed 19 shots (11 SOG) or fewer from every opponent except No. 20 Wake Forest and No. 7 Princeton this season. Nine opponents have been held to under nine total shots and under five SOG. Only Bucknell (12), has had more than 10 corners in an entire game.
Spaans, a powerhouse in the midfield, had kickstarted a multitude of offensive efforts for the Leopards in 2022 which led her to a First Team All-Patriot League laurel on Nov. 1.
The Bussum, Netherlands native converted four goals and seven assists for 15 points. Three of Spaans' goals came against crucial conference opponents: American, Boston and Colgate. Two assists helped the Maroon and White secure a 3-2 overtime victory against No. 7 Princeton on Sept. 25. The Tigers are the highest-ranked opponent that has been downed by Lafayette in program history.
The Leopards concluded the 2022 season on Oct. 29 with an overall record of 7-11 and 3-3 in conference play.
