Softball Splits With Marist in Final Mid-Week Contest

Miner belts home and records three hits in opening game; Leopards erase 11-run deficit in game two

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – A six-run third inning propelled Lafayette to a 9-1 win over Marist in the opening game of Wednesday's doubleheader. In game two, Lafayette erased an 11-0 lead before dropping a 15-13 decision in decision in 11 innings.
 
Senior Natasha Miner set the tone for the Leopards in game one, ripping a solo homer run to start the contest with a 1-0 lead.
 
In the third inning, Kaili Reitano connected for a two-run double and Paige Sandidge and Kristen Brown each added run-scoring singles as the Leopards pounded out six runs on six hits to lead 7-0.
 
The Leopards added two more runs in the fifth thanks to Miner's double and a Grace Harvey sacrifice fly. Miner finished the game 3-for-4.
 
Jacqueline Cal registered her third win of the season, allowing one run on five hits with four strikeouts.
 
Game two was a slugfest with the Red Foxes. Marist broke out for 11 runs in the first inning thanks to Maddie Pleasants and Miah McDonald who each hit three-run home runs.
 
The Leopards kept in the game, however, scoring four runs in the top of the second. Bella Lowdermilk (single), Jasmine Nguyen (walk), Miner (single) and Kaya Ciccone-Cozart (walk) all plated runs.
 
Lafayette followed the four-run second with a seven-run seventh inning.  Harvey (3 RBI) doubled in two runs. Miner plated another with a bases-loaded walk before Harlie Bickett, Ciccone-Cozart, Kinzi Van Wyk and Reitano (3-for-5) all singled in runs to knot the game at 11-11.  
 
Neither team scored in the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth or ninth innings. In the 10th, Miner started on second base due to the tiebreaker. She stole third and later scored on a sac fly as Lafayette snatched the 12-11 lead.
 
In the bottom half, Marist re-tied the game with Alyssa Grupp's RBI-single to send the game to the 11th inning.
 
In that inning, Ciccone-Cozart scored on a wild pitch and the Leopards were again in position to win, leading 13-12.  
 
As the game went to the home portion of the 11th inning, the Red Foxes tied the game at 13 apiece on an RBI-double. The next batter, Alyssa Yarem ended the game with a two-run home run that put the final at 15-13.
 
Morrigan Gardiner, who threw the final three innings of the game, took the loss while allowing two earned runs on six hits. She followed Kailee Sawai's circle appearance that covered 6.1 innings and surrendered three earned runs with five strikeouts.
 
Lafayette returns to action this weekend with a three-game series at Holy Cross. First pitch on Saturday and Sunday is noon.
