EASTON, Pa. – Maroon Club Hall of Famer and coaching legend Peter J. "Pete" Carril '52 passed away on Aug. 15 at the age of 92. Carril was inducted to the Maroon Club Hall of Fame in 1980-81 and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1998.
A native of Bethlehem, Pa., Carril attended Liberty High School and later Lafayette College, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in Spanish in 1952. Carril's senior season of 1951-52 at Lafayette saw him average 18 points per game while leading the Leopards to a 15-9 record under head coach Butch van Breda Kolff.
Following his graduation, he served a short stint in the Army before moving on to the basketball coaching profession. After stops at Easton and Reading High Schools and Lehigh University, Carril began his coaching career at Princeton in 1967, succeeding his former college coach van Breda Kolff. He spent 29 years at Princeton amassing 514 wins, 13 Ivy League titles, one NIT Championship (1975) and 11 NCAA Tournament appearances. Carril also coached the Olympic teams of Spain and Argentina and spent a decade as an assistant coach NBA's Sacramento Kings.
A private viewing for family and close friends only will be held at Kimble Funeral Home in Princeton, N.J. and a memorial service honoring Carril will be held at Princeton University's Jadwin Gymnasium at a date to be determined.
