Leopards Travel to Boston U.

Lafayette vs. Boston U. game notes

THE OPENING TIP
*    The Leopards travel to Boston U. on Saturday to take on the team atop of the Patriot League standings.

*    On Jan. 5, Boston U. defeated the Leopards 66-48 at Kirby Sports Center. Sophomore forward Kayla Drummond led the Leopards with 12 points.

*    In Lafayette's last game on Wednesday, an injury-hampered Lafayette team came up short to Holy Cross, 67-49 in Easton. Junior guard Makayla Andrews led the Leopards with 22 points, just one point shy of tying her career high.

*    With Antognoli and Booth not available to run point against Holy Cross, freshman guard Kay Donahue stepped up to the challenge. The rookie earned her first career start with career-highs in points (7), rebounds (5) and minutes (34).

*    Lafayette hosts Loyola on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

SCOUTING BOSTON
    Boston U. is 17-6 overall and undefeated (12-0) in Patriot League play this season.
    The Terriers are currently the number one team in the Patriot League, with Holy Cross in following up in second. Boston U. leads the conference in scoring margin (12.0), field goal percentage (45.2), three-point field goal percentage (40.1) and combined team rebounds (38.8). Junior forward Caitlin Weimar leads the Terriers in points with 14.2 ppg. The forward also ranks second in the conference in rebounds per game, snaring 10.1. Senior Sydney Johnson leads the Terriers with 3.5 assists per game. The guard scored her 1,000th point in the last meeting with the Leopards on Jan. 5.

LAST TIME OUT
     An injury-hampered Lafayette team dropped a 67-49 decision to Holy Cross on Wednesday night.
    Junior guard Makayla Andrews led Lafayette with 22 points, one point shy of tying her career-high. Six players suited up tonight for Lafayette including freshman Kay Donahue, who registered career-highs in points (7) and rebounds (5).
    Holy Cross' leading scorer Bronagh Power-Cassidy led the Crusaders with 22 points. Cara McCormack and Lindsay Berger joined her in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
    The Leopards hung with the Crusaders the first quarter, heading to the break down 18-16.
    Holy Cross went on a 9-2 run from 8:10 to 5:04 in the second quarter, taking a 27-18 lead. Power-Cassidy drained 16 points in the first half as Holy Cross led 32-23.
    From the start of the third to the 2:13 mark, Andrews netted all eight of Lafayette's points in the quarter, as Holy Cross led 42-31. At 1:08, Halee Smith drained a three as the Leopards closed out the third trailing 44-34.
    In the fourth, McCormack netted a three, to spur a momentum-grabbing run for the Crusaders, as they led 50-37. The three-pointer led to a 20-12 run for Holy Cross the remainder of the game, in the 67-49 victory.

ANDREWS TAKES THE REIGNS
    With three usual starters battling injury, Makayla Andrews stepped up and scored 22 points against Holy Cross on Wednesday. The effort was just one point short of tying her 23-point career-high that she netted at American on Dec. 30.
 

HARD WORK PAYS OFF
    In the last three games, freshman guard Kay Donahue has averaged about 25 minutes per game. Prior to Colgate on Jan. 28, the rookie averaged 8.5 minutes per game. Donahue earned career-highs in points (7), rebounds (5) and minutes (3) against Holy Cross on Wednesday.


MATTHEWS FIRST CAREER START
    Aniya Matthews earned her first career start against Holy Cross on Wednesday. The center netted five points, grabbed five rebounds and had career-highs in assists (3) and blocks (2).

SMITH NETS CAREER HIGH
    Sophomore guard Halee Smith netted a career-high 18 points at Lehigh. The Alexandria, Pa. native shot 50 percent (2-for-4) from three-point range and also added five rebounds and two assists.

ANTOGNOLI FOR 23
    Sophomore Abby Antognoli came within one point of tying her career high against Colgate on Jan. 28, putting up 23 points. The guard scored a career-high 24 points on Jan. 11 against Navy.

FOUR IN A ROW
    Prior to last weekend's loss to Lehigh, the Leopards won four consecutive Patriot League games over the past couple weeks. All three wins were decided in an exciting fashion in the final minutes. On Jan. 18, Lafayette's win streak started as the Leopards edged American 59-57 for the annual School Day Game. Lafayette secured a 63-60 upset against Lehigh in the 104th meeting of The Rivalry on Jan. 21. On Jan. 25, the Leopards netted 19 points in the fourth quarter to defeat Loyola 39-35. Lafayette rounded out the month with a 53-45 win over Colgate on Jan. 28. 

ANOTHER WEDNESDAY WIN
    The Leopards have earned five out of their eight wins on Wednesdays. On Jan. 25, Lafayette defeated Loyola in the final minutes in Baltimore. Lafayette's other Wednesday wins throughout the season have occurred against UMBC, St. Francis Brooklyn and Navy. The three other games won were on a Friday or Saturday, against NJIT, Lehigh and Colgate.
