Box Score ALBANY, N.Y.- Albany's first-half header proved to be the game-winning moment, as Lafayette fell to Albany 3-0 through 90 minutes in New York.
The first-half of play was quiet from both sides until Albany broke the deadlock. Alex Pechacek whipped in a corner in the 20
th minute, as Lafayette looked to defend the set piece. Tiago Dias opened the scoring with a precise header. The effort was driven hard and low, ultimately giving sophomore goalkeeper
Eric Axtman no chance.
The Great Danes held a majority of the possession within the first 45 minutes which stifled the Leopards'
attack.
Senior captain
Hale Lombard had the best chance for Lafayette in the opening half. A defensive miscue from Albany gave the Belleair Bluffs, Florida native a chance to get a shot away. Lombard didn't think twice before striking the ball on the half-volley. Daniel Shannon made a strong save down to his left side to keep Albany in the lead.
Freshman
Roy Biegon came into the game with 20 minutes left in the half and provided a spark on offense. He danced between two Albany defenders before the last man back came over to clear away the impending danger. The first half ended 1-0 to Albany.
The Great Danes kept their momentum going at the beginning of the second half. Ander Castillo had a chance to make it 2-0 but Axtman made a great save to his bottom left corner to keep the deficit at one.
Mamadi Jiana doubled Albany's lead in the 49
th minute. Ivar Orri Gissurarson played a give and go with Castillo who found Orri Gissurarson with room to run. Orri Gissurarson's shot was saved by Axtman but Jiana was there to tap home the loose ball. Albany took its advantage to 3-0 in the 62
nd minute off a header from Castillo assisted by Pechacek.
The Leopards are back in action on the road at 6 p.m. on Saturday, as they venture across town to take on archrival Lehigh.
