Box Score LOWELL, Mass. – Lafayette battled UMass-Lowell to a 1-1 final on Wednesday night at Cushing Field in non-conference men's soccer action.
Lafayette's first chance of the match ended up being its best chance in the first 45 minutes. Sophomore winger
Max Fujimori stood over a corner kick before playing it short to fellow classmate
Beaux Lizewski. Lizewski's service found sophomore
Griffin Feather at the back stick who played the ball into the penalty area. The ball eventually made its way out to freshman defender
Jackson Vajda, who rifled the ball towards the back post, but goalkeeper JR Gawel made a big stop for the River Hawks in the 21
st minute.
Senior goalkeeper
Griffin Huff was called into action just one minute later. After the Leopards took another corner, UMass-Lowell began to break on the counter attack. A River Hawk midfielder eventually slipped the ball into defender Rui Aoki's path but his tame effort was collected comfortably by Huff.
Lafayette was great at winning first and second balls in the first 35 minutes of play, but the River Hawks began to hold more of the ball with 10 minutes to go in the first period. UMass-Lowell created some half chances, but the Leopards' defense held strong.
In the 40
th minute, Mauro Fernandez almost broke the deadlock for the River Hawks. He stood over a freekick 35 yards from Huff's goal when his attempted cross came close to Huff's top-right corner. Luckily for Lafayette the service soared just over the crossbar.
Sophomore forward
Roy Biegon had a half chance before the end of the half, but it concluded 0-0.
The River Hawks controlled possession and had a few chances to open the second half. In the 55
th minute, Calvin Scholten tried his luck from range but his shot found the side netting of Huff's goal. The first yellow card of the game was distributed to Guillermo Frances Poquet in the 63
rd minute, after he brought down Lizewski in transition.
Senior captain
Carter Houlihan ripped the cross bar in the 67
th minute when the ball fell to him at the top of the box. Vajda attempted to follow up, but Gawel was up to the task.
In the 78th minute,
Andrey McIntyre broke the deadlock for the Leopards. Lafayette had a throw in on the right flank that pinballed its way to the feet of Lizewski. The Cranberry Township, Pa. native saw a striding McIntryre and slipped him in behind the River Hawks defense. The senior forward took a great first touch before firing home on his weaker left side to give the Maroon and White the lead.
With time winding down UMass-Lowell began to throw more numbers forward and it paid off.
Fernandez had the ball on the right flank prior to serving a ball into the box towards Yanis Lakhlifi. Lakhlifi did just enough to not allow Huff to collect it and Martin Harguindey was there to tap the ball home in the 84
th minute.
Both squads battled relentlessly in midfield for the remaining five minutes, but neither side could find the winner.
Lafayette is back in action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday vs. Siena for its first home match of the season at Gummeson Grounds: Home of Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium.
