Lafayette game notes

OPENING TIP
Lafayette men's basketball returns to Kirby Sports Center to play Cornell, an Ivy League team that the Leopards have met 27 times since 1930. The squads have played each other every year since the 2015-16 season, not including 2020-21 as the Big Red did not hold athletic competition due to the COVID pandemic.

Last time out, the Leopards fell to SEC foe Texas by a final decision of 97-60. Lafayette had two players finish in double figures, combining for a total of 38 points; sophomore Caleb Williams tallied 20 points with three rebounds and two assists while senior Andrew Phillips added 18 points and four rebounds.

The Leopards return eight players from last season, four of whom saw significant game time. Lafayette concluded 2024-25 with a 13-20 (7-11 PL) overall record, advancing to the Patriot League Tournament's quarterfinal for the second year in a row. The Maroon and White lost five players to graduation and one player to the transfer portal.

The Leopards host a total of six non-conference games while traveling to seven opponents before Patriot League play begins on Dec. 31. From Nov. 28-30, Lafayette will hold the second-annual Lafayette Classic inside Kirby Sports Center with Le Moyne, Ball State and Monmouth.

Next up, Lafayette hits the road for West Virginia on Monday at 7 p.m.

THE MATCHUP
Cornell finished the 2024-25 regular season at 18-11 (9-5 IVY), reaching the Ivy League Tournament finals as the regular-season league runner-up. The Big Red return two starters and seven letter winners, including senior captain Cooper Noard. He is averaging 26.5 points and 5.0 rebounds in Cornell's first two games in addition to classmate Adam Hinton is averaging 20.5 points on 57 percent shooting from 3-point range. The Big Red look to snap a three-game losing streak that dates back to last season while extending its win streak over Patriot League opponents to 11 games and its win streak over Lafayette to five. Cornell has scored at least 85 points in 16 of the 31 contests the past two seasons, additionally reaching 100 or more points four times.

Second-year head coach Jon Jaques was set at the helm of the program on April 5, 2024 after two seasons as an associate head coach and eight years on the staff in total. He was a former Big Red captain and member of the 2010 NCAA Sweet 16 team, earning three Ivy League titles as a player. Before his coaching career, Jaques played professionally in Israel for Ironi Ashkelon. Last season, he was a finalist for the Joe B. Hall National Coach of the Year as the winningest first-year mentor in Cornell men's basketball history.
