Lafayette Continues Academic Prowess in NCAA Graduation Success Rate

Leopards secure third-best overall mark (97) with 16 teams posting perfect scores

EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette College athletic programs rank among the country's best when the NCAA's Division I annual Graduation Success Rate (GSR) data was released on Wednesday afternoon.

Lafayette boasted a 97 percent GSR based on the 19 sports measured while 16 of the Leopards' teams achieved a graduation success rate of 100 percent.

Within the national rankings, Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, Marquette, Northwestern, Notre Dame, San Francisco and Yale led the country with scores of 99. Lafayette was in a group of 25 schools, including Brown, Dartmouth and Stanford which featured a score of 97.

As a conference, the Patriot League recorded a 94 – above the national average of 90. Institutionally, Colgate stood out at 98, followed by Lafayette, Boston U., Bucknell and Holy Cross (97). Lehigh and Loyola Maryland trailed them (96) with Navy (94), American (93) and Army (91) rounding out the group.

Lafayette's 16 programs which received perfect GSR scores were baseball, men's and women's basketball, fencing, golf, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis, field hockey, softball and volleyball.

In addition to those programs with perfect GSR scores, the Leopard football program had the eighth best score (93) in the country. Lafayette joined schools from the SEC, ACC, CAA, Big Ten, Big 12 and the Ivy League in the top 10.

GSR was created in 2002 in response to Division I college and university presidents who wanted data that more accurately reflected the mobility of college students beyond what the federal graduation rate measures. The GSR formula removes from the rate student-athletes who leave school while academically eligible and includes student-athletes who transfer to a school after initially enrolling elsewhere. This calculation provides a more accurate measurement of student-athlete success.
