Helmick Drafted by the Cincinnati Reds

The junior was selected in the 20th round of the MLB Draft

EASTON, Pa. - Tristan Helmick of the Lafayette baseball team was selected in the 20th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Sunday.

Helmick was selected with the 602nd pick in the 20th round by the Cincinnati Reds. The Fort Washington, Pa. native has amassed eight wins in 37 appearances, with a 6.37 ERA and 141 strikeouts. As a junior, the Economics major earned his first win of the season in Lafayette's 11-6 triumph over No. 13 NC State, controlling the NC State bats for much of the game. The righty pitched eight innings and allowed just two runs on eight hits, while striking out three. Helmick recorded a career-high 14 strikeouts in Lafayette's 4-2 win over rival Lehigh on April 17.

With the selection of Helmick in this year's draft, the Lafayette Nine have now had 17 former Leopards selected in the Major League Baseball Draft, with the most recent selections prior to this year coming in 2023 when Jake Bloss '22 and Justin Johnson '22 were selected as the 99th pick in the third round by the Houston Astros and the 289th pick in the tenth round by the Kansas City Royals, respectively.
