EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - In a physical battle between the top two teams in the Patriot League under lights at Metzgar Fields on Wednesday, Lafayette walked away the 1-0 victor over the league-leading Bucknell Bison in double overtime.
With the win, the Leopards (6-9, 4-1 Patriot League) take over the top seed in the league rankings with one game remaining in Patriot League action.
The two teams remained scoreless through regulation and the first overtime period until sophomore Paulo Coelho (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) headed the game winning goal past Bison keeper Steve Whitaker off a pass from freshman Marko Lukin (Boonton, N.J./Morris Catholic) in the 110th minute of play.
Senior goalkeeper and Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week Drew Stotler (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) picked up four saves in his third consecutive shutout, and start, of the season
Bucknell (8-8-2, 3-1 Patriot League) was outshot by Lafayette 16-8 in the contest and picked up two yellow cards in falling to second place in the Patriot League.
Next up for the Leopards is a league matchup at Colgate on Oct. 28 before rounding out their regular season with a home contest against Binghamton on Nov. 4.
