EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette's ace three-point shooters took over in the second half of their meeting with Scranton on Wednesday, as the Leopards nailed eight threes in the second stanza and shot 90 percent from the foul line to dispose of the visiting Royals, 81-69.
Scranton (4-4) jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the non-conference game and the Leopards struggled to catch up throughout the first half. Royal sharp shooter Dan Loftus scored 16 points in the first half, including four three-pointers, and center Derek Elphich added 10 to lead the squad into the lockeroom with a 42-36 lead.
But the Leopards (5-4) were not ready to have their 16-game home winning streak broken in their last game at Kirby in the year 2000, as the team regrouped and Tim Bieg took over from behind the arc. The senior co-captain nailed four three-pointers, including three in a matter of three minutes, to put Lafayette on top for good, 57-54.
Three Leopards finished in double figures on the night with Bieg and fellow co-captain Tyson Whitfield netting 16 apiece. Bieg also added six assists and four rebounds while Frank Barr netted 12 points and Rob Worthington had a team-high seven boards in the Lafayette victory.
Elphich finished the game with a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds while teammate Loftus finished with 21 points, four assists and three steals.
Lafayette has a bit of break before traveling to the Cal-Berkley Tournament on Dec. 29-30. The Leopards will face off against La Salle in the first round while Yale and California battle for the other spot in the tournament championship game.
