Lafayette College's Maroon and White squads each
managed just one touchdown against tremendous defensive pressure
in the Leopards' annual Spring Football Game, but the White team
notched a field goal to secure the 10-6 victory. Today's game, which
punctuates three weeks of spring practices, featured a Maroon team
consisting primarily of the first-team defense and the second-team
offense, competing against the White team consisting primarily of the
first-team offense and the second-team defense.
Tailback Andy Ficzko (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East), who
will be a junior this fall, proved to be the offensive hero of the day. The
speedy running back scored touchdowns for both squads, rushing for
60 yards on 12 carries and catching one pass for 17 yards.
Senior-to-be Brian Tuma (Lebanon Township, NJ/Voorhees), a
stand-out at strong safety the past two seasons, has moved to
tailback and is proving to be a positive addition to the Leopards'
backfield.
The Leopards' quarterback spot appears to be locked up by Brian
Buczek (Bloomingdale, NJ/Depaul), who enters his junior season
this fall. He completed 12-of-25 passes for 87 yards for the White
squad, including a 23-yard connection with classmate Phil
Yarberough (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon). Yarberough finished with five
receptions for 58 yards.
The Maroon squad's quarterback was sophomore-to-be Harry
Armstrong (Taylor, PA/Riverside), who also had a strong
performance by completing nine-of-24 passes for 109 yards. Four of
Armstrong's passes were caught by his classmate Jeff Werrell
(Allentown, PA/Salisbury), who finished with a game-high 66
receiving yards.
Defensively, the Maroon squad's Rachaud Evans (Poughkeepsie,
NY/Kecham), a junior-to-be linebacker, led all players with eight total
tackles, while the White team was led by senior-to-be free safety
Angel Colon (Garfield, NJ/St. Joseph's Regional), who finished
with five tackles and four pass break-ups.
Lafayette concluded the 1998 season with a 3-8 overall record, and
improved to 3-3 and third place in Patriot League play. For the 10th
time in 13 seasons of Patriot League football, the Leopards entered
the month of November with a shot at the conference championship.
Lafayette opens its 118th season of football on September 11, when
the Leopards travel to Towson University for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
