Women's Lacrosse Replenishes Ranks With 13 Recruits

May 11, 2000

EASTON, Pa. - Three players from Philadelphia's traditionally strong Inter-Academic League, as well as Jennifer Stone (Newtown, Pa./The George School), a prolific scorer in high school, highlight head coach Jill Redfern's first-ever recruiting class. In all, 13 new recruits will form the class of 2004.

Stone, a 73-point scorer in her junior season at the George School near Philadelphia, also intends to play field hockey. She is joined by Inter-Ac players Kim Maron (Blue Bell, Pa./Springside), Katie Curtin (Oreland, Pa./Germantown Academy) and Andrea MacCullough (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter).

Maron, an attacker, played for the Pennsylvania Schoolgirl's Lacrosse Association team at the Women's National Tournament in Dublin, Ohio, as well as the Keystone State Games last season. MacCullough is also a seasoned veteran of the Inter-Ac All-Star team, and has attended such camps as the Elite 300 camp at Loyola College and Bay State Lacrosse Camp. She also played in the Keystone State Games last summer.

The state of Virginia sends two exciting recruits to Lafayette in Jill Marvin (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) and Liz Schaefer (Fairfax Station, Va./Lake Braddock). Marvin, whose father Doug is an alumnus of Lafayette, was the captain of the 1998 Virginia state champions and is an all-around athlete, lettering in lacrosse, basketball and volleyball. She helped her lacrosse team to 26 straight victories over the last two seasons, and after seven games this season was leading her team with 20 goals and six assists. Schaefer may be asked to fill in at the starting goaltender position for the departed Leela Strong.

"I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of this class," said Redfern. "We have huge spaces to fill, losing eight seniors. There is going to be some definite competition for playing time and some opportunities for freshmen to step in and play."

The 2001 Leopards open their season up Feb. 17 when they travel to the University of North Carolina for the South of the Border tournament.
