Three Women's Lacrosse Players Named All-American

May 16, 2000

EASTON, Pa. - Two seniors and a sophomore who were keys to Lafayette's Patriot League Championship season have been honored with regional Second Team All-American status.

Seniors Loren Berkheimer (Swarthmore, Pa./Ridley), Kellee Salber (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) and sophomore Heather McClelland (Springfield, Va./Kimball-Union Academy) were all named to the Second Team. Berkheimer was selected as a midfielder, McClelland at attack, while Salber garnered an At-Large bid.

Berkheimer, who was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year as well as earning a First Team All-League nod, was an all-around player. She scored 31 points on offense, including 21 goals. Berkheimer's strength, however, was her defense. She led a defense that allowed just 7.27 goals per game, and was second on the team with 28 caused turnovers. Berkheimer was also an integral part of the posession of the ball, taking most of the draws for the Leopards, and snagging 46 draw controls on the season, 24 more than her closest teammate. The midfielder finished her career averaging one goal per game in her 56 games played, and tacked on 25 assists for a career total of 81 points.

Salber was the Leopards' third-leading scoring with 43 points, but had a flair for the dramatic in her senior season. The attacker almost singlehandedly helped Lafayette regain momentum versus Colgate in the Patriot League Championship game, scoring five goals, including the game-tying goal with 1:08 remaining. Her 33 goals were the second highest total of her career, just behind her freshman season total of 39. Salber was also instrumental in keeping the ball on the Leopards' half of the field, scooping up 65 ground balls and grabbing 22 draw controls, both second on the team.

Finally, McClelland led all Lafayette scorers with 67 points coming on 49 goals and 18 assists. The sophomore avoided `the slump,' outdoing last year's output of 55 points. She led the Patriot League in scoring and goals per game, while being ranked ninth in the nation in points per game, with 4.47. Her nine points versus Bucknell, coming on five goals and four assists all in the first half, tied for the ninth-highest output of season in the nation. In just 31 games, the second year player has scored 122 points, an average of 3.94 points per game.

Lafayette finished its season 11-4, including winning its last eight games, the third longest win streak in the nation this season. The Leopards' Patriot League Championship is their eighth in the 10-year history of the league.
