Lafayette Men's Soccer Falls To Monmouth, 4-2

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette let a 2-0 first-half lead slip away, as Monmouth scored four unanswered goals in a 4-2 Lafayette loss in men's soccer action on Wednesday.

Lafayette scored a pair of goals to take an early 2-0 lead. At the 18-minute mark, freshman Steve Orloff (Port Washington, N.Y./Schreibner) took a crossing pass from the left side of the field from senior Keith Evans (La Plata, Md./La Plata) and booted in the Leopards' first goal. The score was the first of Orloff's collegiate career.

The second Lafayette score came from the foot of sophomore Brad Bertkau (Somers, N.Y./North Salem) who also notched his first collegiate goal. He was aided by passes from freshman Jamie Mullarkey (Cramlington, England/Cramlington) and sophomore Adam Decker (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) who were both credited with assists on the goal that gave Lafayette a 2-0 lead at 26:58.

Monmouth got on the scoreboard at 37:12 when Damon Albano beat Lafayette goalie Craig Schroeder (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) on a penalty kick that had been awarded by the referee. The score made it 2-1 at halftime. Schroeder finished the game with five saves.

In the second half, Monmouth senior Evan Schottlander tied the game and seized the momentum for Monmouth when he beat Lafayette's last defender and fired a shot to the back of the net at 53:13.

Monmouth senior Juuso Oilinki scored the game-winner at 60:47 off a corner kick from sophomore Kyle Herchert. The Hawks tacked on an insurance goal under two minutes later (62:34) when sophomore Marc Lewis beat Schroeder to put the final at 4-2.

The Leopards (0-4) were not without their chances in the final 30 minutes as they had several corner kick and direct kick opportunities fall short. For the game, Lafayette outshot Monmouth 13-10 and held a 10-6 advantage in corner kicks.

Two-time defending Patriot League champion Lafayette opens conference play on Saturday when it hosts Army at 3:30 p.m. at Metzgar Fields.
