Men's Soccer Loses 5-1 in Patriot League Opener

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Two-time defending Patriot League champion Lafayette saw just how tough Patriot League play is going to be in 2000, as the Leopards lost a 5-1 decision to Army to open Patriot League play.

Lafayette and Army each scored a goal in the first half. Thomas Obaseki broke away on an Army counter attack and pounded home a close-range shot at 20:30.

Lafayette evened the game 13 minutes later, when senior defender Mike Gualtieri (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) took a cross from junior Keith Evans (La Plata, Md./La Plata) and sent a volley into the back of the net. The goal at 33:18 was the first of Gualtieri's collegiate career.

In the second half, it was all Army. Josh Summerlin scored 2:30 into the half from 25 yards out for the eventual game-winning goal. Twelve minutes later Todd Severson headed in a Dan Burton crossing pass at 59:58.

Tim Crook and James Glaze each added insurance scores in the the final 20 minutes, Crook, connecting at 73:40 off a Summerlin cross and Glaze on a crossing pass that was not cleared by the Lafayette defense.

For the game, Lafayette was outshot 13-11, with nine of the shots on goal.

Army goalkeeper Kevin Larabee made eight saves in the win. Three goalies, Craig Schroeder, Drew Stotler and Jay Freedman, all spent time between the pipes for Lafayette. Schroeder made three saves while allowing four goals in 75 minutes.

Lafayette (0-5, 0-1) travels to Stony Brook on Wednesday for a 1:30 kick off.
