EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) -
The Lafayette field hockey team came back after losing its last three games to claw its way past Monmouth Wednesday, 2-1. The game marked the homecoming of Monmouth head coach Monica Morgan Levy, a 1993 Lafayette graduate and four-year member of Lafayette coach Ann Gold's field hockey and lacrosse teams.
The Leopards (4-4) were on the attack from the start of this contest, registering nine penalty corners in the first half and 19 total for the game. Sophomore Megan Monahan (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) capitalized on one of those corners with 30:38 remaining in the second half, off assists by Kelly Maiers (Telford, Pa./Souderton) and Jill Gulotta (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck).
Monmouth (5-6), which recorded just two penalty corners in the game, came back six minutes later to tie the contest at 1-1 off a goal by sophomore Kellie Nurko. But the Leopards refused to go home with another loss and turned to freshman Jennifer Stone (Newtown, Pa./George School) to score the winning goal over the Hawks on an awarded penalty stroke with 7:22 remaining.
Next up for the Leopards is a road trip to St. Joseph's on Friday for a non-league contest at 3:30 p.m.
