EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) -
After a convincing 3-1 win over La Salle Saturday, the Lafayette field hockey team took a step back in a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Villanova Tuesday. The Wildcats played host to the defending Patriot League champion Leopards, and shocked Coach Ann Gold's team by scoring four unanswered goals in the second half.
Lafayette jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first half when freshman Jennifer Stone (Newtown, Pa./George School) found the back of the net off a penalty corner. Jill Gulotta (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck) and twin sister, Beth, were credited with the assists and the Leopards went into the half up by one. Beth Gulotta (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck) scored a goal of her own with 2:24 left to play in the game but it was too late as the Leopard defense surrendered four goals to Villanova in the second period.
Amy Cohen (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) had another outstanding game for Lafayette, recording 12 saves in the cage, but offensively the team managed just seven shots on goal and the defense was busy blocking 21 total Wildcat shots.
Villanova's goals came at the hands of Stephanie Vrettos, who scored two of the team's four second-half goals, while teammates Nicole DiMaggio and Leah Lisausky each added one.
The Leopards' next game is Saturday at home against Patriot League nemesis Ursinus.
