EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette men's basketball team posted a 73-44 win over Cornell on Saturday at Kirby Sports Center. Sophomore center Rob Dill led the way for the Leopards with 15 points and 11 rebounds, both career highs.
Sophomore Justin DeBerry made a fast-break layup in the Leopards' first possession of the game to give Lafayette a lead it would hold for the remaining two halves of play. In the first half, the Leopards led by as many as eight points when senior Reggie Guy hit a three-pointer at 3:23. A Brian Burke jumper gave Lafayette a 27-18 lead at halftime. Burke, who has scored in double figures in all eight games in 2001-02, ended with 12 points.
The second half belonged to the Leopards, as they outscored the Big Red 46-26 on 50 percent shooting from the floor. Lafayette made 14-of-16 free throw attempts for 88 percent in the second half. DeBerry, who finished with 16 points, shot 3-5 from behind the arc for 11 second-half points.
Cornell was led by Cody Toppert who scored 12 points and Eric Taylor who had seven. Taylor also pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds.
Lafayette held a 45-30 advantage on the boards and committed a season-low eight turnovers.
After a 10-day break for finals, Lafayette returns to action on Dec. 19 when it hosts Scranton at 7 p.m.
