Women's Lacrosse Silences The Explorers, 16-6

April 10, 2001

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette women's lacrosse team came back from a 2-0 deficit in the opening seven minutes of its non-conference game against La Salle to knock the Explorers out of the contest and walk away with a 16-6 victory on Tuesday at Metzgar Fields.

La Salle (5-5) jumped out to the lead off consecutive goals from senior Mary Quinlan, giving the Explorers a 2-0 advantage at the 23:40 mark. But the Leopards (8-3) answered back with two goals from freshman Kim Maron (Blue Bell, Pa./Springside) and scores from Jodi Spector (Baltimore, Md./Park School), Stephanie Tinney (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley) and Heather McClelland (Springfield, Pa./Kimball-Union Academy) to take a 5-2 lead before La Salle could make another mark on the scoreboard.

Goals from Christine McDonald and Jamie Willus cut the Lafayette advantage to 5-4 but goals from freshmen Jennifer Stone (Newtown, Pa./George School) and Katie Curtin (Oreland, Pa./Germantown Academy) in the final minute of the first half gave the defending Patriot League champions a 7-4 edge going into the break.

The second half was a Lafayette scoring spree as La Salle would only manage two goals the rest of the way and the Leopards connected on nine shots.

Freshman Erin Gallagher (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock) recorded three goals and an assist while Tinney finished with two scores and two assists against the Atlantic 10 Explorers. Spector added three goals while McClelland, who ranks second in the nation in scoring, had two goals and an assist. Maron also had three points on two scores and a dish.

Willus, who leads the nation in scoring and points per game this season, was held to two goals on the afternoon.

The Leopards wrapped up play against the Big Five this season with a record of 4-1 against the Philadelphia conglomerate.

Lafayette heads to Hamilton, N.Y., on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. to take on the preseason favorite Colgate Red Raiders in Patriot League action.
