Lafayette earned its 12th win of the season, the most wins the program has earned since its 16-2 season in 1991, as it shook off a pesky Columbia team, 13-8, on Wednesday at Metzgar Fields. The game was the Leopards' last regular season game of the season.
Lafayette (12-4) got out to an early 2-0 lead off goals from Stephanie Tinney (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley) and Heather McClelland (Sprinfield, Va./Kimball-Union Academy) to set the tone against its Ivy League opponent. But the Lions (2-12) were able to knot the score as Meredith Corkery scored on a free position and Maggie Via put in a pass from Bola Bamiduro with 7:26 left in the half.
McClelland scored off the next draw for the 3-2 lead before Arianna Faucetta managed to put in a pass from Elizabeth Gilroy to again tie the game. McClelland added another goal and assisted on a goal by Kim Maron (Blue Bell, Pa./Springside) to put the Leopards up 5-3 at the break.
McClelland scored the opening goal of the second half and Maron followed with a goal on a pass from Jennifer Stone (Newtown, Pa./George School) in the first six minutes. Stone added a goal of her own to put Lafayette up 8-3 but Columbia started a spurt of its own.
Ellen Lowrey, Faucetta and Beth Broderick each scored in the next three minutes to force Lafayette to call a timeout. But the Leopards would answer the call of head coach Rebecca Joseph as they outscored Columbia 5-2 in the final 12 minutes.
Maron finished the game with three goals and an assist while McClelland led all scorers with four goals and an assist. Lowrey and Faucetta each had two goals for the Lions.
The Leopards host the Patriot League Tournament this weekend as the No. 1 seed and face off against No. 4 Colgate on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
