Sept. 25, 2001

Final Stats

VESTAL, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - Junior defender Paulo Coelho (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) recorded his first career hat trick, leading Lafayette to a 3-1 win over Binghamton in men's soccer action on Tuesday.

Lafayette (5-1-1) and Binghamton (0-7) were originally scheduled to play Sept. 15, but the game was postponed due to the terrorist bombings.

After a scoreless first half, Binghamton took a 1-0 lead when Ron Sanon fired in a rebound shot at 54:32.

That Binghamton lead quickly dissolved six minutes later when Coelho headed in a pass from senior Keith Evans (La Plata, Md./La Plata) to deadlock the game at 61:25.

Coehlo drilled home the game winner at 77:59 from 15 yards out and added an insurance goal at the 86:55 mark in the 3-1 win.

Lafayette held a 14-8 shot advantage and an 8-1 margin in cornerkicks.

Sophomore goalie Jay Freedman (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow East) made four saves in goal.

Lafayette returns to action at American on Saturday in the Leopards' Patriot League opener.
