Lafayette Field Hockey's 2002 Season Comes To An End

Nov. 12, 2002

The NCAA Division I Field Hockey Committee announced the 16-team field for the 2002 championship tournament tonight in a live video webcast and the Leopards, after dropping a 1-0 overtime heartbreaker at California earlier today, did not receive an at-large bid.

The 18th-ranked Leopards' 2002 season is officially complete, but the past few days have been exciting ones for the program. Lafayette captured the Patriot League Championship this past weekend, where they defeated Bucknell, 8-1, in the semifinals and then downed Holy Cross, 2-1, in the title tilt. The championship marks the Leopards' third title in the nine-year history of the Patriot League Tournament and Lafayette's seventh Patriot League championship in the conference's 13th season.

Leopard senior Megan Monahan, the two-time Offensive Player of the Year in the league, was named Tournament MVP after tying the tournament record of eight points. With three postseason goals, Monahan also tied the school and conference mark for goals in a season with 33.

Lafayette ends the season with a 19-3 overall record that included a Patriot League and school-record 19-game win streak.
