EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette women's lacrosse team met Patriot League newcomer American for the first time on Saturday at Rappolt Field and came away with a dominating 13-5 win over the Eagles. Sophomore Jennifer Stone led the Leopards with four goals while senior co-captain Stephanie Tinney added two goals and two assists on the day.
Lafayette (5-4, 2-0) freshman Cristin McGuinn set the pace by scoring her first career goal at 28:35. McGuinn propelled the Leopards to a 3-0 lead with two more goals at 27:18 and 26:39 for her first career hat trick.
American's Nicole McCarthy got the Eagles on the scoreboard on an unassisted goal at 22:36. Lafayette responded as senior co-captain Heather McClelland found Stone in front of the net for a tally at 21:26. The Eagles' Courtney Bennett scored on an assist from Lindsay Cartin to bring American within two (4-2) at 19:51.
Lafayette closed out the first half by outscoring American 4-1 on goals from Stone, Jill Marvin, Tinney and McClelland. American's Jamie Crean recorded the Eagles' final tally of the first half as the Leopards took an 8-3 lead going into halftime.
American (5-4, 3-1) struck first in the second half on a goal from Cartin at 27:03. Lafayette quickly rebounded as sophomores Fallon Cunningham and Katie Curtin scored a goal each to put the home team ahead, 10-4. The Leopards notched three more goals from Tinney and Stone (2) while American's Adele Fenwick found the back of the net at 14:15 for the final goals of the game.
Senior goalie Leela Strong had nine saves in goal while the Eagles' Laura Randisi made 11 stops between the pipes.
Lafayette outshot American 24-14 while the Eagles picked up 48 ground balls to the Leopards' 45. The Leopards improve to 2-0 in league play while American falls to 3-1.
Lafayette returns to action on Tuesday as its travels to Philadelphia to take on Temple at 3 p.m.
